Stony Brook University
As one of ten research universities given a
National Science Foundation recognition award for integrating research
and education, Stony Brook University continues to receive national
recognition for its dedication to academic excellence.
The National Research Council ranked 22 of our doctoral
degree programs in the top 50 percent in the nation, making Stony Brook
the best public research university in the Northeast. And Stony Brook
was the first public university in New York to be recognized by the
Carnegie Foundation as a “Type I Research”
university—the highest classification and a distinction granted
to fewer than two percent of all colleges and universities nationwide.
As a sign of its dedication to excellence in education, the University
recently became a member of the Association of American Universities
(AAU), the invitation-only organization of the best universities in the
United States and Canada, joining the ranks of universities such as
Harvard, Princeton, and Yale.
Since its establishment in 1957, the University has
grown at a prodigious rate. Here are just a few of Stony Brook’s
latest accomplishments:
- Stony Brook is one of 16 Leadership Institutions named by the Association of American Colleges and Universities.
- We are the only SUNY campus with two
State-designated Centers for Advanced Technology—the Sensor
Systems CAT and the Center for Biotechnology—which facilitate
partnerships between New York State industry and University research.
- Stony Brook University Hospitalis Long
Island’s foremost health-care provider offering state-of-the-art
care in virtually all specialties. The Hospital provides Suffolk
County’s only open heart surgical program, performing more than
800 open heart operations a year.
- The University co-manages Brookhaven National
Laboratory, joining such universities as Cornell, MIT, Princeton,
University of California, and University of Chicago that run federal
laboratories.
- The Latin American and Caribbean Studies
Center is one of nine programs in North and South America selected as
sites for the Rockefeller Foundation Residential Fellowship in the
Humanities program. This is the first Rockefeller Foundation award ever
received by Stony Brook.
- The Whitaker Foundation awarded a $3 million
grant to the Department of Biomedical Engineering to develop a research
and education focus in Molecular Biomedical Engineering. The award is
the latest in a series of grants made to Stony Brook to support its
efforts in biomedical engineering and biotechnology.
- Stony Brook recently joined the New York
Consortium of Graduate Schools, which permits graduate students to take
courses for credit at schools in the New York City area, including
Princeton, New York University, and Columbia.
- The University has expanded its offerings with
a campus in New York City. Students may take undergraduate and graduate
courses at Stony Brook Manhattan, as well as attend special lectures
and conferences offered there.
Living in Stony Brook
Stony Brook University is located in one of the East
Coast’s most desirable spots—the North Shore of Long
Island, about 60 miles east of New York City (midway between Montauk
and Manhattan). Our 1,100-acre campus provides students with a
peaceful, yet stimulating environment in which to pursue studies. From
campus it’s an easy bicycle ride to picturesque villages and
harbors of the North Shore or Long Island Sound beaches, where
spectacular sunsets and some of the best windsurfing on the East Coast
can be enjoyed. A short drive will take you to beautiful Atlantic
beaches at Fire Island, vineyards of the North Fork, or the elegant
resorts of the Hamptons. And, with a Long Island Rail Road station on
campus, a train ride will bring you to the heart of New York City.
The campus houses more than 100 buildings, including
the expanded Student Activities Center, the Frank Melville Jr. Memorial
Library, the Sports Complex, the Health Sciences Center, and University
Hospital. Housing space is increasing and all residence halls were
recently remodeled and upgraded.
Family Life
Stony Brook is a great place for families. The University provides
students with everything they need to create a home away from home,
from the Barnes and Noble bookstore, full-service deli, and health-care
facilities to craft sales, seasonal farmer’s markets, and DVD
loans at the library. One- and two- bedroom apartments for couples and
families, and three- and four-bedroom apartment shares for single
graduate students are available on campus at the University Apartments.
The Off-Campus Housing Service office also will assist students in
finding suitable arrangements close to campus. For families, the Stony
Brook Child Care Center offers day care for children ages six weeks to
five years old as well as a preschool program for children three to
five years old.
For those with older children, the surrounding school
districts are rated among the highest in the state. High school
students in these districts annually place in the semifinals of the
Intel Science Talent Search, with many of those students being mentored
by Stony Brook professors.
From cultural events to shopping to sports, Stony Brook has it all in close proximity.
Although Manhattan is only a train ride away, theatre
lovers need travel no farther than the Staller Center for the Arts.
Located on the Stony Brook campus, the Staller Center presents hundreds
of plays, concerts, and special events each year. Staller’s
annual two-week summer film festival is recognized as a
“mini-Sundance.” For those who enjoy cultural events, the
new Charles B. Wang Center, celebrating Asian and American cultures, is
a comprehensive conference facility and showcase for the arts,
featuring exhibit spaces, interior and exterior pools, gardens, and a
chapel.
For sports and fitness enthusiasts, the University has
a Sports Complex complete with running track, squash and racquetball
courts, and a pool. The outdoor 8,500-seat Kenneth P. LaValle stadium
holds major sporting events and concerts. The Paul Simons Memorial
Bicycle Path—six miles of well-lit, paved trails that encompass
the campus—is used year-round by cyclists, skaters, and runners.
The Student Activities Center houses the Eugene Weidman Wellness
Center, which offers fitness classes in everything from aerobics to
yoga, and state-of-the-art exercise equipment.
