Stony Brook Receives $1.4 Million in New Equipment from Anorad Corporation for Mechatronics Laboratory

STONY BROOK, N.Y.— Stony Brook University has received a contribution of $1.4 million in new equipment for its Mechatronics Laboratory from Anorad Corporation, a division of Rockwell Automation. A dedication ceremony for the new equipment took place on Wednesday, November 2 in the Heavy Engineering Building. The laboratory, which will now be one of the best equipped of its type in the country, was re-named the Rockwell Automation Anorad Mechatronics Laboratory as part of the festivities.

Mechatronics is the synergistic combination of mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, and software engineering. This interdisciplinary field studies automata from an engineering perspective. It serves the purposes of controlling advanced hybrid systems. The lab will be used to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in control, manufacturing automation, and robotics, and for research.

“Rockwell Automation and its Anorad division are pleased to establish this advanced Mechatronics Laboratory,” said Jim Smith, President of Anorad. “This same equipment is deployed globally to solve complex control and motion applications in the semiconductor industry, the electronics industry, the packaging industry, and many industries needing resolutions to advanced motion problems. We support the vision and the promise it brings for a higher standard of living through automation.”

Anorad had previously contributed $20,000 for Stony Brook's Senior Design Project to Aid Handicapped Children.

Peisen Huang, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, will be the Director of the lab.
