Stony Brook Breaks Ground on a $25M STAR Research Center

STONY BROOK, NY — On September 24th, Acting Executive Director of the New York State Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR), Edward Reinfurt announced the groundbreaking of the Stony Brook STAR world-class Research Center for Biotechnology and Bioengineering.

NYSTAR is a government public-benefit corporation that supports collaborative industry/academic partnerships to foster integrated approaches for developing and commercializing innovative technologies.

“[This investment] represents confidence in the ability of Stony Brook's scientific leaders to drive discovery and commercialization of technology.” said Reinfurt (NYSTAR).

The Stony Brook STAR Center will bring together two State-sponsored Centers for Advanced Technology (Center for Biotechnology and Center for Sensor Systems) to perform research in functional genomics instrumentation, gene discovery, drug design and delivery, smart micro and nano-based biomaterials, and biosensors.

The two centers have alone invested and facilitated more than $50M in translational research activities on campus. Together with Stony Brook's Department of Biomedical Engineering, the Center for Biotechnology has contributed to more than 20 license agreements, the formation of seven new companies, and an economic impact of more than $500 million.

In addition to these two centers, the STAR center will attract researchers from Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), the world's most distinguished private bioscience research institution.

Construction of the Center is expected to be completed in 2009 amounting to 30,000 square feet. The Center will consist of 17 laboratories and applied research programs to as many as 17 Stony Brook faculty members, and employ more than 100 people. In addition, more than 60 additional faculty members are affiliated with the STAR Center with primary appointments in the School of Medicine , College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Brookhaven National Labs and Cold Spring Harbor Labs.
