American Physical Society Recognizes Stony Brook Graduate Student For Outstanding Achievements
Overseen by the American Physical Society (APS), the award recognizes outstanding achievements in physics by undergraduate students and provides encouragement to young physicists who have demonstrated great potential for future scientific accomplishment. Two awards are presented annually consisting of $5,000 to the nominating Physics Departments and $1,000 for the finalists. Certificates and awards are also presented to the Physics Departments whose nominees become finalists and recipients. Gadway was recognized for his senior-year research, "Creation and Measurement of a Single-Proton Two-Qubit State to Test a Bell-Kochen-Specker Inequality," at Colgate University . His project tested fundamental theories of quantum mechanics using single photons, the results of which ruled out certain hidden-variable theories. According to Gadway, the great expectation of these experiments is the prospective of future applications. "This type of research could lead to denser memory storage for computers." Gadway also received a University of New South Wales Travel Scholarship , is an Optics Fellow supported by the Graduate Assistance grant in Areas of National Needs from the U.S. Department of Education. His research was presented at the Division of Laser Science's Symposium on Undergraduate Research in September in San Jose . The symposium, organized by Stony Brook, brings together 40 high-achieving students from across the country for a presentation of their research. Gadway is from Rouses Point , NY , and aims to become a professor and inspire other young researchers. |
