The Department of Music at Stony Brook has grown into a remarkable musical institution, with a highly respected international reputation. Stony Brook is a special place for many reasons: remarkable faculty, the flexible, interdisciplinary scope of our graduate programs, relatively small size, and proximity to New York City (near, yet not too near!). But the true secret of the department lies in its atmosphere: professional, collaborative, and informal. Our graduate students are treated as fellow professionals, with courtesy and respect. As a result, graduate students are entrusted with a great deal of responsibility in the day-to-day operations of our department. Graduate students organize concerts, provide administrative and technical support, teach and coach undergraduates, and perform in ensembles. Some of this is required work: part of a course requirement, a graduate assistantship or a work-study assignment, but much work is voluntary. Many of the most exciting events at Stony Brook - for example, the New York City concert series and Canadian Tour by our Contemporary Chamber Players - developed from student initiative. This spirit of enterprise, collaboration and mutual support among students and faculty builds a musical community which nurtures and empowers our students, and prepares them well for careers as professional musicians and educators.

Stony Brook's program attracts students from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East as well as the U.S. and Canada. Our alumni have won positions in major universities or orchestras all over the world. Many are pursing successful solo and free-lance careers in New York City or in other cities. The fact that Stony Brook alumni frequently send their own students to Stony Brook speaks to the impact this school has had on their musical life. We invite you to become part of our community.
