The School of Journalism offers a Master of Science degree in journalism, to begin in June, 2011. The program focuses on coverage of health, science, the environment and technology, while educating students in traditional journalistic skills and in the use of a wide range of current media.

The 40-credit MS program is designed for students who have journalism training or experience but may have little background in science, as well as students who are strong in science, including science majors and graduate students seeking alternative career paths, but may have little background in journalism. Students will benefit from access to Stony Brook’s rich science resources, including its relationships with Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and from its dynamic journalism resources, including an up-to-date, $1.3 million newsroom

In addition to the Master’s degree, the Graduate Program offers innovative 1-credit and 3-credit courses for science graduate students in Communicating Science to the Public. These courses are offered in collaboration with Stony Brook’s Center for Communicating Science. They can be taken individually or as part of the Advanced Certificate in Health Communications, offered jointly by the Graduate Program in Public Health and the School of Journalism.
