Stony Brook University's English Department, in the College of Arts and Sciences, is known for its excellence in scholarship and teaching. Within the last ten years faculty members have published more than 47 books of criticism, fiction, and poetry. Among the many awards individuals have won are the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics' Circle Award, Guggenheim fellowships, Fulbright research and teaching fellowships, and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships and grants. Five faculty members have received both the Chancellor's and the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, and two have been appointed SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professors.
On campus, there are several other programs and institutes closely affiliated with the English Department. The Annual International Stony Brook Short Fiction Prize, for instance, is sponsored and managed by members of the faculty. The Humanities Institute provides a place for interdisciplinary and theoretical work, offers an annual graduate student seminar, and sponsors on ongoing lecture series and an annual conference of international speakers. Several faculty are affiliated with certificate programs, such as the minor in Medieval Studies, Women's Studies, and the Cultural Studies Certificate. The department maintains close ties with the Program in Writing and Rhetoric and sponsors an annual conference for graduate students.
