Director's Message
Lou Charnon - Deutsch, Director, Graduate Studies

The Department of Hispanic Languages and Literature offers graduate students the opportunity to conduct advanced research in Spanish Peninsular and Latin-American language, literature, and culture. Our goal, in terms of instructional philosophy, is to train a diverse body of graduates— traditionally, we have recruited students from many national and ethnic backgrounds—to become accomplished scholars and professors able to function effectively and successfully at any level of higher education.

At a time when disciplines in general—and particularly in the humanities—are undergoing tremendous changes, our program prepares students to integrate traditional disciplinary values with the most innovative approaches, methodologically and theoretically speaking, available today. To this end, we field a strong and distinguished group of specialists in both Peninsular and Latin American studies. As a modern multidisciplinary department, Hispanic Languages and Literature is fully integrated into an extensive network of collaborative links with other departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, including Comparative Literature, Women's Studies, Philosophy, History, and European Languages. Our members also work very actively in the Humanities Institute, the Latin American and Caribbean Center , the new Cultural Studies Program and the American Studies Program.

Our goals are matched by our achievements. In its 30 years of existence, the Department of Hispanic Languages and Literature has established itself as one of the leading and most innovative programs of Spanish and Spanish-American studies in the country (it has been ranked among the top 15 departments of Hispanic Language in public research universities). Graduates from the program have been consistently hired by prominent institutions of higher education. We are looking in the future to enhance our already distinguished reputation, and invite you to join us in fulfilling our ambitions.
