Application and Admission

Application Materials and Deadlines
For information on admission requirements, financial aid and much more, please review the Graduate School website at www.grad.sunysb.edu , where you will also find a link to the on-line Application for Admission. In addition to the on-line application, candidates must provide two official copies of transcripts from undergraduate (and, if applicable, graduate) coursework as well as official GRE scores and three letters of recommendation. Foreign students must also provide acceptable TOEFL scores. More information on these requirements may be found on the Graduate School web pages. To report official test scores, the "institution code" is 2548 and the "department code" for the Genetics program is 0210. Transcripts and any supplemental application materials should be mailed directly to the Genetics Program, Stony Brook University, #130 Life Sciences Building, Stony Brook, NY 11794-5222.

Admission applications should be filed by January 15. Admission decisions are made by program on a rolling basis. All documents should be on file by January 15 for Fall semester admission. Late applications will be accepted but will be considered only if openings still exist.

Admission
The prerequisites for acceptance into the Program are an undergraduate degree with work in the biomedical and biological sciences as well as a demonstrated interest in a professional career in biological or biomedical basic research. To be admitted to the Graduate School, an applicant must have the preparation and ability that, in the judgment of the program and the Graduate School, are sufficient to enable him or her to progress satisfactorily in a degree or certificate program. A United States equivalent bachelor’s degree is required, with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale; the student must present evidence that such a degree will be awarded by the time he or she begins graduate work. Admission into the degree granting programs in Genetics typically requires a GPA considerably higher than the minimum required by the Graduate School itself.

Financial Support and Benefits
All students who are accepted into the program are accepted with full support including fellowship stipends and tuition waivers. The support package for the 2006-2007 academic year includes a $25,000 stipend, health insurance benefits and full tuition scholarship. This same package is provided to continuing students in the program, with periodic increases in the stipend.

Applicants are encouraged to apply independently for fellowships offered by the National Science Foundation and other organizations. Some of these confer a high degree of flexibility on recipients and offer excellent stipends. Inquiry should be made in early September and be directed to:

Department Web Sites
Prospective graduate students can also find useful information about Stony Brook on the University’s home page on the World Wide Web (www.sunysb.edu). The first page of this site directs the reader to information about the Stony Brook area, campus events, libraries, and research programs. It also links to a list of Web sites for every department and program on campus. The Genetics Program Web site is on this list, along with those of the Pharmacology, Microbiology, Biomedical Engineering, and other departments relevant to training and research in Biological Science. One can also go directly to the Genetics department home page (http://life.bio.sunysb.edu/gen). Here one can find more detailed information about the program, our faculty, and our research. In many cases, faculty members have included information about the students who work with them, photographs from their laboratories, and summaries of current research and publications.
