LIPP Presentation of Spiked HeelsDirector’s Message
Steve Marsh, MFA., Director, Graduate Studies

At Stony Brook University, the Master of Fine Arts degree in Dramaturgy is not only the second oldest program of its kind in the country, but it is the most responsive to the evolving fields of production dramaturgy, literary management and dramaturg-driven theatre. Our graduate students bring their unique ideas to the program where they develop a solid foundation of professional ethics, practical experience and aesthetics on which they build their dramaturgy.

The three-year program combines challenging course work in dramatic literature, history and theory with dynamic experiences in artistic and administrative leadership positions in the department’s theatrical programming: The Long Island Play Project (LIPP), The Dance/Theatre Concert, The Conservatory Classic, The John Gassner New Play Festival (JGNPF) and the Graduate Student Cabaret together provide abundant opportunities for our graduate students to excel as dramaturgs, performers, producers, directors, artistic and literary associates.

Many of our graduates work as dramaturgs and literary associates in professional theatres in New York and across the country, while others have chosen to enter the field of teaching at universities and in public and private schools. The Teaching Practicum is a required course that gives our students valuable experience in developing courses and teaching in the classroom or studio. Students also have the opportunity to develop secondary strengths by working with designers and in Theatre Arts marketing.

Our program seeks highly motivated graduate students who will take advantage of all that our program has to offer, and who have a strong desire to make a difference in the world’s professional and educational theatre landscape. We encourage our students to take advantage of our proximity to New York City, the theatre capitol of the world; in the course of graduate study students in the program will take several elective and required courses at the Stony Brook Manhattan Campus in Midtown Manhattan. The Stony Brook University MFA program in Dramaturgy and its dedicated faculty of Theatre professionals and educators welcomes you.
