Application and Admission
Application forms can be obtained by calling the Department of Theater Arts at (631) 632-7300; or by writing to the Graduate Program Director, Department of Theatre Arts, 3046 Staller Center, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY 11794-5450. Besides completing the application form, applicants will need to provide the following: (1) two official transcripts of all undergraduate and (if applicable) graduate coursework; (2) official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (Stony Brook’s code for score reporting is 2548); (3) an acceptable score (550 minimum) on TOEFL for foreign students; (4) three letters of recommendation; and (5) a non-refundable $50 fee.

The deadline for receipt of applications and all supporting materials for the Fall term is February 1. Students are admitted in Spring only under special circumstances.
Admission
In addition to the above requirements, advanced undergraduate courses in theatre history, dramatic literature, or theatre practice is required for admission to both the M.A. Program in Theatre Arts and the intensive M.F.A. Program in Dramaturgy. Supporting materials must include a sample of the applicant’s writing as well as other materials such as scripts, essays, publications, portfolio, etc.
Applicants should note that admission to the M.F.A. Program in Dramaturgy is highly selective. Students in the M.F.A. program are evaluated at the end of each year of study before permission is granted to continue.
Financial Support and Benefits
Most graduate students are funded through teaching assistantships. The Department of Theatre Arts also presents the John Gassner Award and the Richard Hartzell Award to deserving students who demonstrate career promise.
