Chair's Message The Department of Chemistry at Stony Brook has a strong commitment to improving the quality of life through research and education in chemistry. Our goal is to contribute significantly to basic and applied knowledge in chemistry, with emphasis on health, environment and energy, while offering excellent education programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. In particular, we want to be able to respond to the needs of society, to anticipate future changes in chemical research, and to enrich students' perspectives. Thus, the emphasis is on the principles of theory and practice, on creative thinking, and on the frontiers of chemistry, especially in materials chemistry and the life sciences. Courses, colloquia, seminars, individual research, and faculty-student interactions are at the core of this program, giving students both depth and breadth of knowledge in these areas.
