The department’s computing facilities are second to none. The Laboratory for Parallel Computing has a custom-built 250-node Galaxy parallel supercomputer. Galaxy replaced the department’s 120-node Intel Paragon parallel supercomputer. There are more than 200 Sun and Silicon Graphics workstations and high-end PCs in the department. Most student offices have a workstation at every desk. Galaxy’s computation power is needed for research projects involving complex numerical simulations of nonlinear wave interactions, elastic plastic flow, molecular dynamics, DNA-protein binding, materials simulation, electromagnetic scattering, gene circuits, and other physical phenomena. Over 20 research assistants and six research postdoctoral fellows are supported by grants to work with the Galaxy machine. The Laboratory for Computational Geometry involves faculty and graduate students from Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, along with several postdoctoral fellows who work on problems in computer-aided design, robotics, virtual manufacturing and visualization. The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics shares the Math Tower with the Department of Mathematics and the Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics. The building contains a conference center in addition to offices for
faculty and graduate students, attractive seminar rooms Campus-Wide Facilities At the center of West Campus stands the Frank Melville Jr. Library, which holds two million bound volumes, three million in microformat, and a substantial video and DVD collection; around the library are the major academic buildings for the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Van De Graaff nuclear accelerator, the Administration Building, Jacob K. Javits Lecture Center, Computer Science Building, Educational Communications Center, Computing Center, the Fine Arts Building, the Staller Center for the Arts, the Stony Brook Union, the Indoor Sports Complex, the new Football Stadium, and other service buildings. The Student Activities Center (SAC) features a food court and dining hall, a market and gift shop, study and assembly areas, and an auditorium. The SAC provides a focal point for the extracurricular activities that are such an important part of life on campus. The Graduate Student Organization (GSO) office is located on the second floor of the SAC. GSO provides many services and acts as an advocate for graduate student rights.
