Application
Application forms can be obtained by calling the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at (631) 632-8370; or by writing to the Graduate Program Director, the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY 11794-3600, or from the Graduate School Web page at www.grad.sunysb.edu.
In addition to completing this form, applicants will need to provide the following: (1) two official transcripts of all undergraduate and (if applicable) graduate coursework; (2) official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (Stony Brook’s code for score reporting is 2548); (3) an acceptable score (550 minimum) on TOEFL for foreign students; (4) three letters of recommendation; and (5) a non-refundable $60 fee.

The department considers applications at any time and does not have a deadline, but prefers that application files be completed by March 1 for Fall admission and September 1 for Spring admission.
Admission
In addition to the above requirements, a bachelor’s degree in engineering, mathematics, computer science, physics, chemistry, or the social sciences with a strong mathematics background is required.
Financial Support and Benefits
Applicants for doctoral study with strong academic records will be considered for a stipend and an award of tuition expenses. Doctoral students who do not receive financial support in their first year are eligible for support in future years. Stipends are often supplemented by grant funds over the normal University stipend level.
The Department offers financial support in the form of teaching assistantships or research assistantships or fellowships. Currently more than 50 students are receiving support. Awards are renewable on maintaining good academic standing, subject to available funds.
