Office of the Dean To New Graduate Students: Welcome to Stony Brook and to the Graduate School! We are delighted that you have chosen to continue your studies at Stony Brook University and I offer my personal congratulations on your being admitted to such a great school. I also want to thank you because graduate students are the lifeblood of a research university and your presence here will enhance our creative, research and scholarly programs and the academic lives of our faculty. Your timing is excellent as Stony Brook is in an exciting phase of development. We awarded our first Ph. D. in 1966 and by 1995 the National Research Council ranked Stony Brook as the best public research university in the Northeast. In 2001 we became a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, the invitation-only organization of the best research universities in the country. Our university continues to be recognized as shown by our high rankings, honors and awards, most recently being ranked in the top 1 percent of colleges and universities worldwide by The London Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings. Funded research exceeded $200M last year and is growing steadily. Not bad for a young university, and your efforts here will help us to take the next step. We are continuing to enhance and grow our facilities to meet the needs of our students and faculty. Stony Brook University Hospital remains the largest hospital in the county, the only academic medical center on Long Island, and the only tertiary care hospital in Suffolk County. We recently celebrated the grand opening of the new wing of the Medical Center and the CEWIT Building (Center of Excellence in Wireless Technology, an interdisciplinary center for the study of wireless and educational technologies). Stony Brook has facilities that stretch from our Manhattan and Southampton locations to the Turkana Basin Institute in Kenya and beyond. Long Island is an extraordinary intellectual center with Stony Brook being placed midway between the nation's premier Department of Energy research laboratory (Brookhaven National Laboratory) and the nation's leading privately funded Biological Research Laboratory (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory). Our students also enjoy access to advanced doctoral courses in New York City as the result of Stony Brook's membership in the Inter University Doctoral Consortium. Stony Brook's future depends a great deal on its ability to recruit and retain outstanding graduate students so the Graduate School, the Administration and the faculty extend a warm welcome to you. We are committed to helping you realize your professional goals, so please don't hesitate to contact us if you think we can be of any assistance. Sincerely,
Lawrence Martin |
